Donald Trump raises stakes as US-China trade war begins

Donald Trump has threatened to impose tariffs
worth hundreds of billions of dollars on Chinese
imports to the US as a trade war between the
world's two largest economies began on Friday.
US tariffs on $34bn (£25.7bn) of Chinese goods
have come into effect.

China retaliated by imposing a similar 25% tariff
on 545 US products, also worth a total of $34bn.
Mr Trump said the US might target Chinese
goods worth $500bn - the total value of Chinese
imports in 2017.
Beijing accused the US of starting the "largest
trade war in economic history" and has lodged a
case with the World Trade Organization (WTO).

"Trade war is never a solution," said Chinese
Premier Li Keqiang. "China would never start a
trade war but if any party resorts to an increase
of tariffs then China will take measures in
response to protect development interests."

The government-run English language China
Report said: "The Trump administration
is behaving like a gang of hoodlums with its
shakedown of other countries, particularly
China."
Conflict within the administration
By Tara McKelvey, BBC News White House
reporter
Behind the trade war, there's conflict within the
administration. Hardliners such as Peter Navarro,
a trade policy adviser, says the US is defending
itself against an "aggressive" China. Meanwhile
some of the officials who had previously worked
for the Obama administration - known as
"holdovers" - are hoping to tamp down the US-
China conflict.
The tension between these factions is
occasionally on display in the West Wing. I've
seen two hardliners struggle over a podium,

vying for a chance to broadcast Mr Trump's
harsh message on economic issues, while the
holdovers sit quietly at the side of the room.
This reflects a larger division in the White House:

Mr Trump and his closest aides are trying to
bring about radical change, while those who
support a more cautious approach find
themselves sitting in silence.
Analysts at Bank of America Merrill Lynch
forecast only a modest escalation in the US-
China battle, adding: "However, we can't rule out
a full-blown, recession-inducing 'trade war'."

Rob Carnell, chief Asia economist at ING, said:
"This is not economic Armageddon. We will not
have to hunt our food with pointy sticks.
"But it is applying the brakes to a global
economy that has less durable momentum than
appears to be the case."

China's decision to impose its own tariffs means
US goods including cars, soya beans and lobsters
are now subject to additional taxes.
BMW said it could not absorb all of the 25%
tariff on the cars it exports to China from a plant
in Spartanburg, South Carolina and would have to
raise prices.

The US tariffs are the result of Mr Trump's
attempt to protect US jobs and stop "unfair
transfers of American technology and intellectual
property to China".

The White House said it would consult on tariffs
on another $16bn of products, which Mr Trump
has suggested could come into effect later this
month.
Mr Trump said: "You have another 16 [billion
dollars] in two weeks, and then, as you know, we
have $200bn in abeyance and then after the
$200bn, we have $300bn in abeyance. OK? So
we have 50 plus 200 plus almost 300."
The imposition of the tariffs had little impact on
Asian stock markets. The Shanghai Composite
closed 0.5% higher, but ended the week 3.5%
lower - its seventh consecutive week of losses.

Tokyo closed 1.1% higher and European markets
were up more than 1% in morning trading before
turning negative on Friday afternoon.
Mr Trump has already imposed tariffs on
imported washing machines and solar panels,
and started charging levies on the imports of
steel and aluminium from the European Union,
Mexico and Canada.
The US tariffs imposed so far would affect the
equivalent of 0.6% of global trade and account
for 0.1% of global GDP, according to Morgan
Stanley.

Analysts are also concerned about the impact on
others in the supply chain and about an
escalation of tensions between the US and China
in general.

''Have mercy on low income earners and collect rent in arrears'' Fashola tells Landlords

Minister of Power, Works and Housing,
Babatunde Fashola, has appealed to landlords
in the country to consider the plight of low
income earners and start collecting their
rents in arrears beginning from today , July 6 ,
2018. He argued that salary earners who could
afford to pay rents, were not receiving their
salaries in advance but in arrears.
Fashola made the appeal when he spoke at an
event organized by the Real Estate Developers
Association of Nigeria REDAN in Abuja
yesterday July 5th.
According to Fashola, most workers, who
earned salary regularly and could even afford
to pay rent, did not receive their salaries in
advance, but in arrears.

“If you ask me to go and bring in
advance, one year’s rent, to what I am
going to earn monthly in arrears, how
feasible is that?
“Even my salary as a minister is paid
at the end of every month, not even at
the beginning, then why should
landlord be asking for next year’s
salary. And we are complaining that
there is corruption?” he said

Speaking further, Fashola said the Nigerian
masses cannot afford to pay house rent yearly
like the well to do in the society.

“I believe this meeting is about the
critical mass of Nigerians, the taxi
drivers , market men and women who
earn their money daily and are not
even sure of making any revenue for
that day .  Meanwhile , landlords
expect advance payments. Those who
get paid weekly pay their rents weekly;
those who get paid monthly pay
monthly rents,”he said

He also recommended that there should be a
Landlord-Tenant-Employer’s relations, whereby
the landlord would reach an agreement with
the tenant’s employer to ensure deduction of
rent on a monthly basis from the tenant’s
salary.

Why herdsmen killed 120 people in Plateau - Miyetti Allah

- Miyetti Allah said herdsmen killed 120

people in Plateau because 300 cows were
killed

- The association while condemning the
attacks urged the security agencies to be
fair to all parties
- They also claimed that those who carried
out the attacks must be on revenge mission

Miyetti Allah Cattle Breeders Association
of Nigeria (MACBAN) has given reasons
why herdsmen attacked mourners in
Plateau state, killing over 120 people
and causing serious injuries to
hundreds others.
The chairman, north central zone of the
organisation, Danladi Ciroma, who
condemned the attacks, however,
claimed the people were killed in
retaliation to the killings of about 300
cows belonging to the herdsmen, The
Nation reports.

He said: “ These attacks are retaliatory.
As much as I don’t support the killing of
human being, the truth must be told that
those who carried out the attacks must
be on revenge mission.

“There have been recent reports of cow
rustling and destruction of farms
between Berom farmers and Fulani
herdsmen. The people carrying out these
criminal activities are well known to the
communities but the communities are
hiding them.

“Fulani herdsmen have lost about 300
cows in the last few weeks – 94 cows
were rustled by armed Berom youths in
Fan village, another 36 cows were killed
by Berom youths. In addition to that,
174 cattle were rustled and the criminals
disappeared with them to Mangu.
“Since these cows were not found, no one
should expect peace in the areas. Even
soldiers that went after the criminals to
recover the rustled cows were shot by
the armed rustlers and eventually
escaped with all the cows."

Ciroma said the state governor, Lalong,
has done a lot to restore peace in the
area but the criminal elements hiding
among their people are frustrating these
peace efforts. He added that security
agencies have tried, but they need to do
more by being fair to all parties.
"They should not neglect any report
presented by Fulani of Berom because
such report can lead to attacks and
deaths if not properly handled.

Criminals
thrive a lot in Berom communities, but
when the Fulani, who are always victims
of their crime, react with attacks, they
blame the government.
“These communities have leaders, why
hide the criminals? They should fish out
the criminals and hand them over to
security agencies to avoid death of
innocent ones.
“As it is today, the Berom man cannot go
to farm, the Fulani cannot breed his
cows in Berom land. This can be stopped
if the security agencies do more than
what they are currently doing. The
attacks will stop as soon as the security
agencies stop Berom youths from
stealing Fulani cows," he added.

Meanwhile, report has that
120 people were killed in an attack by
armed men in Plateau state on
Saturday, June 23.
The pastor in charge of Church of Christ
In Nations (COCIN) Regional Church
Council (RCC) Rop in Barkin Ladi local
government area made this claim.
The cleric said the people were
returning from a funeral service when
they were attacked by suspected
herdsmen.
